You know the kind, says Jillian: "Everyone's like: 'Give up carbs!' 'Give up fat!' 'Wait, no, now I'm taking pills!' None of them are manageable long-term—and they wreak havoc with your metabolism! Because you're either starving yourself or you're cutting out a major food group. Then you go back into weight-gain mode, but it's even worse, because your body has adjusted to all that crazy fad crap."
For those just starting out on their weight-loss journey, Rachael Lenzmeier Jencks, 43, wants you to know that cutting calories blindly, without thinking about the nutritional impact of the foods you're eating, isn't the answer. For strength training, working with a trainer for a session or two can be helpful to acquaint yourself with dumbbells and the types of exercises you can do, but you don’t even need to use extra weight. One of my favorite weight loss tips for women is to add bodyweight exercises like push-ups and lunges to your workouts; they’re super effective and you can do them anywhere. Pilates and more vigorous yoga classes are a great option, too.

have been on the low carb (Ketogenic diet) OVER A YEAR. 20-30 gr for the first 6 months, currently about 40-70 grams daily since then. maybe once a week 70-100gr; High fat (love my whole cream). moderate amount of protein. use coconut oil in decaf with the cream. Since increasing carbs the weight loss has stayed about the same +/- 5lbs but waist size increased by 1-2inches. Noticed hair loss but I don’t know if it’s stress related (husband died just before Christmas).

For example, many people who choose to go vegan have already adopted many other healthy lifestyle values such as exercise, stress reduction, not smoking, portion control, etc. Personally, I’ve met very few chain smoking, binge drinking, sedentary vegans. They are often proactive about their health and the well-being of others. If these types of lifestyles were adopted more universally by those consuming animal products, would we see the same results?

He Terence–that’s a good question. There is enough controversy that I don’t want to write it off completely, but certainly would not recommend it. The weight of the evidence seems to indicate the opposite. People with diabetes have a series of metabolic Derangements (ie insulin resistance, insufficient production) including Alpha cells leaking glucagon causing glucose to release from liver & muscle cells in greater amounts than ‘normal’ people. After about 4 hours of food, this starts to occur. Ingestion of food stops the process as the body can now use this energy coming in. In addition, fasting slows metabolic rate (which doesn’t help with weight loss). There are a handful of other reasons I’d avoid it (generally produces overeating later on being one) as I’ve seen much greater success the opposite–small frequent meals/snacks consisting of healthy foods. If a person is taking insulin, fasting can be dangerous and cause a bottoming out and should never be done apart from physician supervision.

‘Lastly, if your nutrition is on point but you still have excess tummy fat, then you need to look at your training. There’s a real craze for high-intensity workouts and really pushing yourself at the moment, but training is a stress on the body, and if you’re not giving it the tools to manage that stress and recover from it, then it can lead things like excess belly fat.
